Timeless romantic ballet Swan Lake comes to the Grand Theatre
Over 100 years since Pytor Tchaikovsky composed the classical ballet, Swan Lake remains one of the most beloved productions, mesmerizing audiences with a fairy tale of romance and magic.
The timeless love story tells the tale of Prince Siegfried and the swan princess, Odette. Having fallen under the spell of a sorcerer, Odette lives her life as a swan by day, swimming in a lake of her own tears. But come nightfall, Odette returns to her human form, and she and Siegfried quickly fall in love.
Bringing this story to life on the stage of the Regina Rosen Auditorium of the Grand Theatre, the legendary National Ballet School of Odessa presents a full scale production of the moving ballet based on Russian and German folklore. With 55 talented ballet stars, captivating choreography, and stunning costumes, the show is sure to entertain audiences young and old alike.
For Anna Tyutyunnik, principal dancer with the National Ballet School of Odessa, travelling and performing this eternal classic through the United States is an invaluable experience.
“It’s very interesting. It’s amazing that I have the opportunity to see this beautiful country, interesting and big cities, everything…” Tyutyunnik said with awe in her voice. “I see beautiful theatres, interesting theatres, some ancient and some very, very modern, so it’s interesting and this is, I say one more time, this is amazing, this opportunity to see everything.”
Tyutyunnik began her career with the National Ballet School of Odessa almost a decade ago, but her roots in ballet stretch far deeper.
“I went to professional ballet school at eight years old,” she said with a humble giggle.
“It’s basically my whole life.”
The National Ballet School of Odessa is currently in the Canadian leg of their two-month North American tour, and Tyutyunnik expressed that she wants to take in as much of the country as she can during the final two weeks of the production. She will then return home to her family in Odessa, Ukraine.
And, like many ballerinas, Tyutyunnik is thrilled to be a part of Swan Lake, a production many ballerinas strive to be part of from a young age.
“This is a very beautiful production with amazing choreography, and incredible music, and very, very strong dancers,” Tyutyunnik said.
“Audiences can expect everything: beautiful costumes, beautiful music, and an amazing love story.”
