Cricket Field, 1890
The field in front of the Frontenac County Courthouse has historically been called the Cricket Field. While the beginnings of cricket in Canada are not well researched, we do know that there was a stronghold of interest in the game in Upper Canada. Ontario was one of the first provinces to form a provincial cricket association in 1880. This photograph was taken around 1890 and comes out of the E. J. B. Pense album (Pense was the Editor of the British Whig and Mayor of Kingston for one year – check out this blog post on Hunky Guys of Kingston’s Past for more information and a photo).
