CFRC 101.9 FM Funding Drive

CFRC Funding DriveTonight marks the kick off to CFRC’s 8th Annual Funding Drive. Each year, Canada’s oldest campus-based radio station holds 10 days of on-air fundraising and live events to help keep them on the airwaves. As a not-for-profit and volunteer-programmed local media outlet, CFRC focuses its programming on alternative, diverse and local music, as well as spoken word programming. CFRC relies heavily on its volunteers in exchange for free broadcast skills training and experience. The station also organizes community events throughout the year, promoting local music, experimental sound art, independent journalism and grassroots audio production.

CFRC is dependent on listener support, especially at a time where cuts are being made everywhere we look. The goal is to raise $25,000 across 10 days of special programming and exciting community events.  Many of these events are free, but we’re all encouraged to make a donation to help see these unique social and educational opportunities continue to enliven our community.

Here is a list of live events beginning tonight.  Be sure to tune in as well to hear special programming aimed at the drive.

Friday, February 8th 2013: Tonight’s event is a particularly awesome and entirely locally inspired one. Over the past few months, Kingston musicians have banned together to create a live music compilation entitled ‘Civic Guilt,’ recorded by Matt Rogalsky (Memory Device). The CD will be released tonight at The Grad Club with performances by Sweet Jets, Dorothea Paas and Sleuth Bears. Free copies will be available at the show and online. A documentary about the past 10 years in the Kingston music scene will air on CFRC over the course of the campaign as well. Admission to this show is a $5-10 sliding scale. Doors open at 9pm.

Saturday, February 9th 2013: CFRC has teamed up with Reelout Queer Film and Video Festival to present Man Chyna with DJs Sigourney Beaver and Terry Durban in The Wine Cellar at The Mansion.  Admission is a $5-10 sliding scale.

Tuesday, February 12th 2013: The Artel will host a poetry open mic with SLAM Kingston and host Bruce Kauffman (host of CFRC’s “Finding a Voice”) at 7pm.  Local writers of all ages will share their spoken word and poetry.  Local youth artists will be highlighted during the showcase for a special live broadcast on CFRC from 8-9pm.  Please arrive early to sign up to read.  Admission is free.

Wednesday, February 13th 2013:  The Screening Room presents a fundraising screening of Black Orpheus at 7pm.  Tickets are $8-9.

Thursday, February 14th 2013: Maru will celebrate Valentine’s Day and CFRC with “Sing Your Heart Out” karaoke from 8pm-11pm.  Come single or bring that special someone and be prepared to belt out your favourite ballads, love songs and hurtin’ tunes. This is an all-ages, licensed event and admission is a sliding scale of $5-10.

Saturday, February 16th 2013: The Sleepless Goat will host a special live performance by Montreal’s Little Sun alongside Kingston’s own grhmbvrl at 8pm.  Admission is $5 or pay-what-you-can.

Saturday, February 16th 2013:  The Slow Dance is back!  Doors, dance cards and DJs will begin at 9pm at The Grad Club.  It will be an evening of pre-selected slow songs printed on dance cards so you can sign up for slow dances with fellow attendees.  Designated dancers will be making the rounds, adorned with decorative sashes, making sure that there are no wallflowers and there will be a photo booth and a kissing booth on sight.  Formal dress is encouraged but not required.  Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door.
