At the movies for July 26

Welcome back to ‘At the Movies in Kingston’. Will Simba rule the box office again this week, or will some new players from Hollywood wrestle the top spot away?

Here is what’s new at the Kingston theatres for the week starting July 26.

Landmark Cinemas:

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is the ninth film from Quentin Tarantino and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie. Set in the summer of 1969, the movie tells the tale of DiCaprio’s aging movie star Rick Dalton, and how he and his stuntman Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt, are washed up in Hollywood. While this film has been described as a love letter from Tarantino to this golden age of Hollywood, the story will no doubt delve into the Manson murders and the death of Sharon Tate, who is played by Margot Robbie.

Cineplex Odeon:

The Saturday morning 10 am Family Favourites is Pokemon: Detective Pikachu.

Music lovers will be excited for the André Rieu 2019 Maastricht Concert: Shall We Dance? Playing Saturday and Sunday at 12:30 pm.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood also opens this weekend at Cineplex.

The Screening Room:

Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love is the story of the love affair between Leonard Cohen and Marianne Ihlen. The film follows their love from the early days when they met and the struggles they endured as Cohen became a worldwide success.

Maiden is the true tale of Tracy Edwards and how she captained the first all female sailboat in the Whitbread Round the World Race. This was 1989 and the very notion of an all-female crew went against tradition. Edwards and her crew changed people’s minds and shocked the world in what they were able to accomplish.

The Alfred Hitchcock Presents: The Murdering Mind series continues with this week’s showing of the 1948 Hitchcock great Rope. Two friends attempt to commit the perfect crime when they strangle a classmate. The idea of the perfect crime is explored throughout the film and the inspiration for the film is derived from Niezsche’s Ubermensch concept. The film stars Jimmy Stewart and Farley Granger.

The Staff Pick of the Month is Have You Seen My Movie. This is a unique tale which compiles countless scenes in movies of the characters at the movies.

Midsommar is about a couple who seeks out a fabled mid-summer festival in rural Sweden, only to learn the idyllic little town is hiding dark secrets in their quaint little celebration.

Kingston Family Fun World

Kingston Family Fun World Drive-In is the place to be this summer. This week The Lion King and Aladdin are on Screen 1, Yesterday and Crawl are on Screen 2, and Spider Man: Far From Home and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are showing on Screen 3.

Movies in the Square

Movies in the Square will return on August 8 with The Incredibles 2.

Weekend Pick:

The Lion King will no doubt be the number one film at the box office, but Once Upon a Time in Hollywood should appeal to adults looking for something beyond comic book and animated remakes.

The Screening Room continues to have the most interesting programming for the week. Rope continues the Hitchcock love, and Maiden will bring as much action to the screen in the true-life tale as The Lion King will.

Have a great week and enjoy the show.
