Best Spring Rolls in Kingston
One of our favourite things to talk about here at Kingstonist is food. This is probably because there is so much great cuisine to enjoy in ygk. Whether we’re reviewing a restaurant or polling our readers on their favourites, food always brings up a good discussion. While we have looked at who serves up the best Chinese, Thai or Vietnamese, today we’re getting more specific. Let’s talk spring rolls.
First, we need to define what we’re talking about here. A spring roll is not just a spring roll. In fact, spring rolls come in many forms and are a staple snack or appetizer in many countries around the world. The spring roll is believed to have originated in China as a snack that was literally enjoyed in the spring when fresh produce became available after a long winter of eating preserves. Spring rolls can be stuffed with a variety of ingredients, depending on their regional origin, and can come both fried and fresh. Fresh rolls, however, are more often referred to as “Summer Rolls”, so for the sake of simplicity, today we’re going to focus on those delicious deep fried pockets of goodness rather than the fresh, rice wrapped option (which we’ll most certainly cover another time soon!)
Not every spring roll is alike. The thickness of the wrap can make a big difference in the overall taste, quality and consistency, and of course, what’s inside counts just as much. Narrowing down a list for today’s poll was tricky. As you can see below, there are a lot of spring rolls to choose from in ygk. We know we haven’t included everyone, but we’ve done our best to give as many restaurants as possible creating these scrumptious appetizers a shot at the title of Best in Kingston. Whether you’re a fan of pork, shrimp, chicken or tofu, this week we want to know:

A perfect spring roll can set off the whole tone of a meal. What makes a spring roll great in your eyes (or stomach)? Do you like the wrapper to be thick and bubbly or thin and crisp? The sauce is a major factor to consider as well. Peanut sauce, hoisin sauce, the sweet and common nuoc cham sauce…all of these can be equally as important as the roll itself. Tell us what makes your spring roll perfect, and if we missed your favourite spot, be sure to give them a shout out in the comments below.
