Best Fries and Gravy in Kingston

best fries and gravy, local food, Kingston, OntarioSometimes this job is really hard, folks. But we at Kingstonist are dedicated to creating posts that help our readers to find the best of the best in ygk. After many intense discussions about Kingston’s best pizza, pho, steak, poutine, beer, spring rolls, pies and tons more, this most recent task found me exploring the various offerings of french fries and gravy. It was a difficult job, but I did some painstaking research to help make today’s post come to fruition, so I hope you appreciate it.

As always, we’re talking about locally created fries and gravy, preferably homemade over frozen (though we suspect not all meet that criteria), and gravy derived from drippings vs a can or pouch. Saving food trucks for another time, we think we’ve made a list of great local restaurants that live up to these standards.

So, the question is: what makes the perfect fry, and subsequently, the perfect gravy for smothering or dipping? Is your idea of great fries ones that are perfectly browned and dripping with the flavour of animal fat? Perhaps they still have remnants of potato skin for texture. Or, maybe you’re more interested in a crispy, light fry, closer to what you might find at a fast food chain. As I’m sure many of you know, Kingston also has a few options for seasoned fries like the ones found at Stooley’s or Copper Penny.  Then you have wedges, lattice fries, shoestring fries and other shapes and sizes to consider.

Moving on to gravy, I personally can be convinced to try just about any kind of meaty dipping sauce, and have been known to enjoy a good thick, brown gravy just as much as a jus-style sauce in certain situations. Some gravies are infused with beer or wine, giving them a unique and memorable flavour. The type of meat used for the base has a huge impact too. Turkey gravy and beef gravy are two very different things.

While there are many ways to go, I think it’s safe to say that most of us have a strong pull towards one style or another. Considering the myriad of variations possible in the world of fries and gravy, this week’s very important question is:

So, what local version of fries and gravy gets your mouth watering? We want to know how you voted and why. What makes your choice the best choice? Did we make a terrible mistake and leave your number one go-to off the list? Be sure to let us know and give them some love. Drop off your comments below.
