Accused backpack thief arrested while wearing stolen running shoes

A local man who is accused of stealing a backpack from Stauffer Library on Queen’s Campus has been arrested after the victim spotted him carrying the stolen backpack.

The accused man entered Stauffer Library on Friday, Jan. 11, 2019 and stole the backpack, which the victim had put down while finishing up some school work. A short time later, the victim noticed the backpack was gone. The backpack contained various items, including a laptop and a pair of running shoes, according to a press release from Kingston Police.

The victim reported the theft to Campus Security and Emergency Services, and later reported it to Kingston Police, providing the serial number of the stolen la0ptop.

A couple of days later on Sunday, Jan. 13, the victim saw the accused man on campus, and he appeared to be carrying the stolen backpack. Campus Security and Emergency Services were contacted and detained the accused.

Kingston Police responded and, after emptying the contents of the backpack, found the stolen laptop. As the accused man was arrested, he was found to be wearing the stolen running shoes which were in the backpack when it was taken.

The 28-year-old Kingston man was charged with theft and breach of probation.

Kingston Police and Queen’s University Campus Security and Emergency Services would like to remind citizens and students that stolen and/or lost property has a better chance of being recovered if a serial number and other details have been recorded.
