#ygkChallenge: Maximize Your Recycling Efforts

ygkchallenge, recycle, waste, Kingston, OntarioThe #ygkchallenge is an ongoing series where we dare you to be different, resolve to be better, and or do something awesome in support of our beloved community. Each week, Kingstonist establishes a new, ambitious or quirky goal, encouraging you to step out of your comfort zone and do something great, and hopefully a little out of the ordinary. By taking part in this community-wide initiative, we hope to make Kingston (and the world) a slightly better place to live, work and play.

This week’s #ygkchallenge encourages you to:

Maximize Your Recycling Efforts. Through recycling and conservation efforts, the City of Kingston aims to divert upwards of 65 per cent of household waste from the landfill. Not only will this save taxpayers money, it’s also fantastic news for the environment. But did you know that a great deal of recycled material still ends up in the garbage? This is largely due to two factors:

  1. People make poor shopping choices, such as buying items with packaging that cannot be recycled.
  2. People mistake recycling for garbage, and throw it out with the trash.

In both cases, consulting the City of Kingston’s handy guide regarding what can and cannot go in your blue, grey and green bins will ensure your household does not make these errors, helping you to maximize your contribution to overall waste reduction efforts. But why stop there! Take it one step further and forgo putting produce in a plastic bag at the grocery store. Get yourself a re-usable and re-fillable water bottle and/or thermos for coffee or tea. Of course, these are but a few of the ways you can reduce, reuse and recycle.

Join us in completing this week’s #ygkchallenge by liking it on Facebook and/or re-Tweeting it on Twitter. By liking and sharing, you’re not only committing to doing something great, but you’re also helping us spread the word and hopefully encouraging others to participate.
