Kingston Glass Studio and Gallery presents Urban Manipulation: An Exhibition of New Work featuring works by Stewart Jones, Mischka Alexi Hunter and Rick LaPointe.
In the Main Gallery, Modern Fuel presents The Institute for Future Life Regression, an installation of work by Dustin Wilson (Guelph, ON). In this project, Wilson generates simulations of possible future individuals through a participatory form of pseudo-divination and story telling. While Wilson’s practice is multidisciplinary in the production of video and animation, performance and installation, drawing is essential to him for producing speculative images that are filtered through physical, biological and geographic constraints. In his work, Wilson appropriates the forms of systematic representation, museology and didactic illustration. He uses these forms as vehicles for absurdist science fiction narratives, attempting to subvert the semiotics of authoritative representation. The various strata of signs and text within the work engage multiple subjectivities and associative layer, promoting a sense of agency on the part of the viewer, allowing the environment of the installation to be read as a novel of sorts.
Modern Fuel presents, in its State of Flux Gallery, a new installation of paintings by Ann Clarke (Thunder Bay, ON) entitled Edgewise. The focus of her current work is painting as painting, the picture plane, space and colour. Opaque and transparent images are layered, and reflections on the dichotomies of nature/nurture, sacred /profane, organic/manufactured, past/present, and wild/tame, are explored.
Memory and cross-cultural influences also play a significant role. The contrast between flatness and the illusion of space and volume holds her attention as an essential aspect of two-dimensional work. The journey is along the edge, the shoreline, the border between order and chaos.
The Museum and Health Care and The Agnes Etherington Art Centre present an exhibition that commemorates the War of 1812 by combining art and medical artefacts.
The Museum houses Friendly Fire, in which artist Howie Tsui interprets the experiences of the American, British, and Aboriginal forces in the War of 1812 through the lens of medical history, and explores the nuanced interconnections between medical theories and practices, the body, and the War of 1812.
The Art Centre houses Friendly Fire Cabinet, in which Howie Tsui offers a reflection on the creation of Friendly Fire. This display features the compositions and source materials that fed the conceptual evolution and production of the concurrent exhibition at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre.
The Artel presents Dream Friends and ISBN with Sleuth Bears. Doors open at 8:30pm, music at 9pm.
IT’S ALIVE! From the creators of the record-breaking Broadway sensation The Producers comes this monster new musical comedy. A wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend based on Mel Brooks’ classic comedy masterpiece, the story follows bright young Dr. Frankenstein (that’s Fronkensteen) as he attempts to complete his grandfather’s masterwork and bring a corpse to life. With such memorable tunes as “The Transylvania Mania,” “He Vas My Boyfriend” and “Puttin’ On The Ritz,” this production is scientifically proven, monstrously good entertainment.
Mouthy is a storytelling series. All events are PWYC and each has a specific theme. Everyone is welcome to come out and share a story or simply listen. Stories told can be factual or fictional, of your own, or someone else’s!
This month: tell a story that involves music. If last night a DJ saved your life, they want to hear about it. Additionally they will be trying something new for this theme and bringing in a boom box. Feel free to come equipped with a CD or MP3 player loaded with a particular song that means something to you. Play the track and explain the story if its significance.
KPP and CFRC 101.9 present Sandman Viper Command and Archie Powell & The Exports at The Mansion.
