Sketch by Edmund Morris

#TreatiesRecognitionWeek, Kingston, OntarioIn acknowledgement of Ontario’s #TreatiesRecognitionWeek our image is a sketch from Edmund Morris’s notebook that we hold at Queen’s University Archives (Locator 2140). In 1906, Edmund Montague Morris was commissioned by the Ontario government to accompany the Treaty party that travelled to the James Bay region of northern Ontario to negotiate Treaty No.9. As the expedition’s artist, he was instructed to make portraits of as many leaders as he could. While this sketch does not look like an early version of formal portraits, it demonstrations a different perspective from many of Morris’ finished works illustrating a more domestic and intimate subject matter.
