In the installation Settle, emerging artist Katie Strang uses sculpture and vertical gardening techniques to explore ideas of neighbourhood, community and place from the perspective of a recent university graduate.
In this piece scarlet runner beans are planted in and around human-sized wire figures, which are poised to suggest movement or flight. Embedding them in a garden, a place which evokes home and a sense of security and groundedness, creates a tension between the figures on the move, and the plants pulling them back. As the beans grow over the sculptures the figures will become part of the landscape.
Curated by Jocelyn Purdie and located on the front lawn at 448 Bagot St., The Swamp Ward Window is a venue for contemporary art initiatives in an unconventional site in Kingston’s north end. It takes advantage of pedestrian curiosity and the intimacy of a dense urban setting.
The sculptures will be on display and ever evolving until July.
