Art’s Birthday

CFRC presents an Art’s Birthday Radio Cabaret as the second event in its 2010-11 RadioActive Carnival series of sound performance.  Art’s Birthday is an annual event first proposed in 1963 by French Fluxus artist Robert Filliou, who suggested that one million years ago, on the 17th of January, Art was born when someone dropped a sponge into a bucket of water. Filiou proposed a public holiday to celebrate the presence of art in our lives.

This year, CFRC’s RadioActive Carnival series joins international Art’s Birthday festivities with an Art’s Birthday Radio Cabaret at the Artel.  Celebrations begin at 7pm with an art cake contest: bring your homemade art cake to win prizes from local celebrity judges! From 8 to 10pm, local performers deliver live sounds: catch Decomposing Pianos, SOUB?, the Artel Collective, Clive Robertson and others. Join the party for an evening of sounds and celebration. Admission is by donation.  The event will be broadcast live on CFRC 101.9fm and www.cfrc.ca, as part of a day-long feature of Art On Air.

CFRC is a not-for-profit, volunteer-programmed, local radio station with a community-access mandate.  The Art’s Birthday Radio Cabaret is made possible through the support of the City of Kingston and the Kingston Arts Council through the City of Kingston Arts Fund.  For more information, please call 613-533-2121 or visit www.cfrc.ca. Happy one-million-and-forty-eighth birthday, Art!
