WOODPIGEON:
Woodpigeon are an independent rock band from Calgary, Alberta, consisting of eight core members: Mark Hamilton (vocals, guitar), Kenna Burima (piano, vocals), Michael Gratton (bass), Annalea Sordi (accordion, flute, vocals), Daren Powell (drums), Peter Moersch (electric guitar, vocals), Foon Yap (violin), AJ Benoit (vocals). To date, the band have released three studio albums, and a number of EPs to critical acclaim.
When asked about the band’s name, Mark Hamilton explains: “I’ve always been in love with the word Woodpigeon for as long as I can remember. When you write it in cursive, it looks like a rollercoaster”.
The band’s sound has been compared to Sufjan Stevens, Grizzly Bear, Camera Obscura, Simon & Garfunkel, and Belle & Sebastian, amongst others. Band leader Mark Hamilton’s main lyrical influence is The Kinks.
FREE WHISKY:
The Free Whiskey String Band is a vibrant group of young ambitious musicians who take a lot of pride in the music they make, and a lot of care that it be something worth being proud of. This folk Quartet performs weekly with friends and mentors Sheesham and Lotus at the Old-Time Music night, in Kingston ON.
Though armed to the teeth with a collection of fiddle and bluegrass favourites, the bulk of their firepower lies in their unique collection of original songs, charged with clever lyrics, dense vocal harmonies, and barn-burning instrumentals. And although the group is all business when it comes to performance, their strong off-stage chemistry and approachable mannerisms make for a comfortable, and exhilarating listening experience.
