Don Cherry, Kingston Frontenacs, hockey jersey, Kingston, OntarioI think that my body is still out of whack from having Monday off  for Thanksgiving last week.  The fact that it is dark when I get up, and even more ominous when I return home may also be impacting my energy levels.  In that regard, don’t forget to mark your calendars for November 1st, which is the day we get to turn back our clocks.  Do people even do that anymore?  In the age of i-Phones and computers, aren’t daylight savings updated automatically in everything from automobiles to appliances, as well as the bell at City Hall?  If Y2K taught us anything, it’s that we can’t rely on technology to do everything, let alone the simplest of tasks.

As a part of Military Appreciation Night at the K-Rock Centre this past week, the Kingston Frontenacs hosted a grandiose spectacle involving our outspoken ambassador of hockey, Mr. Don Cherry.  Grapes road onto the ice on an army-green military vehicle, dropped the puck, and his presence was felt for the entire duration of the game.  In case you missed it, the Fronts changed their look for the evening, adopting special jerseys, which were inspired by one of Don’s outlandish, plaid blazers.  After the game, the autographed jerseys went up for auction on e-Bay, while the proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Forces’ Soldier On fund.

Soldier On fund works to optimize the functional independence of ill or injured Canadian Forces personnel or former personnel by delivering programs and services and facilitating and integrating opportunities that support their full and active participation in physical fitness, heath promotion and sport. The Canadian Forces is committed to ill and injured personal and their loved ones, through programs ranging from excellent medical care, to vocational assistance to social support and counseling.

This is an outstanding initiative on the part of the Kingston Frontenacs, and testament to Grapes’ generousity.  Be sure to check out the auction, which will end on October 31st.  Speaking of Halloween, it’s high time I figured out my costume for this year.
