NOT FOR PRO?IT

Modern Fuel’s 11th Annual Juried Exhibition will be presented at Modern Fuel from August 8th to September 5th, 2009, with a reception on August 29th at 7pm. This year’s guest curator, Steven Loft, will be in attendance at the reception. The curator has selected work that reflects the wide-ranging practices of Modern Fuel’s member artists and the vibrant art scene of the region that the organization serves. The title of the exhibition “Not For Pro?it” not only references the fundamental nature of the artist-run centre identity, but to a wholly amusing and utterly extraordinary typo in one of Modern Fuel’s recent brochures. It speaks equally to the fragility of the artist-run movement and also to its strength.

This year’s show includes work by eleven artists: Rebecca Anweiler, Caitlin Erksine-Smith, Michèle LaRose, Gillian Little, Sean Morris, Melinda Richka, Laurie Sponagle, Tamara Sponder, Paulette Suavé, Harry Symons, and Cecily Taylor. Including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, textiles, sound art, and video, the exhibition showcases the breadth and excellence of the arts in South Eastern Ontario.

Steven Loft is a curator, writer, and media artist. A Mohawk of the Six Nations, he currently resides in Ottawa, where he was appointed as the first Aboriginal curator-in-residence at the National Gallery of Canada in 2007.

In the State of Flux Gallery: Uyeda and Ogasian’s FACE CAVE immerses the viewer in a concentrated dose of images taken from print media. Assembled from images collected on a daily basis the resulting display is overwhelming. Amy Uyeda and Aly Ogasian both graduated from the Queen’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours program in 2008, majoring in printmaking and sculpture respectively. Since graduating, both have continued their drawing practice and currently reside in Toronto.
