I’ve been in Kingston for 9 years and I finally have a doctor! Well, I shouldn’t put it that way, the four years I was at Queen’s I had access to their health centre but was sent on my way with no help in finding a doctor now that I was moving here permanently. Luckily, after 5 years of going to Hamilton for doctor’s appointments, I have found myself a family doctor right down the street from my home and it was a piece of cake.
Today at the KRock Centre three local family health teams are set up to take in 10,000 new patients. KEDCO has been pushing to bring more family doctors to our town and it looks like we have had success. At least for now, we’ll see how we do today.
So, I got up early and bundled up, expecting to be standing outside for a while, but I walked right in and was filling out a form within minutes. I was able to choose the location I would prefer and then, if possible, you can also choose the sex of your doctor. I had to go with what was available, I guess downtown is busy, but that’s OK with me.
After I filled out my form, which took all of two minutes, I was directed to the table set up with people from my new clinic. They took my forms, gave me a card with their info and offered me an appointment and that was it. I was in and out in about 10 minutes total.
The doctors will be there today only until 8pm. If you are in need of a doctor, now is your chance, so go, go, go! Who knows how busy it may get once work and school let out. All you need is your health card. To find out more about how all of this was put together, check out this article by Kingston This Week.

OMG! I have a similar experience. I’ve been without a family physician for 10 years. I got up early, got my butt into that KRock centre shortly after 8am, and got a family doctor :) Yeah!
I brought my camera and voice recorder to document this historic event. Apparently this was the largest rostering clinic in Canadian, if not world, history. But it was a bit of a let down when I was in and out within 10 mins. Well, NOT THAT much of a let down. :)
