So the Olympics have officially started, and incase you aren’t down with watching the Opening Ceremonies, there’s a lot to do this weekend. Although last weekend was rather uneventful, Kingston is playing host to two crowd pleasing events.
Friday, August 8th
The rather large number of Hummer’s and oversized trailers around the city this weekend are a direct cause of the 1,000 Islands Poker Run . This event starts this afternoon with a show and tell format where these massive machines are put on display all around City Hall. The big event takes place on Saturday as speed boats race to five scheduled checkpoints where they’ll collect cards in an effort to create the best poker hand.
If you’re not the type of person who’s impressed by gas guzzling hulks, you might benefit from a night out at the newly renovated Grand Theatre . Currently, April in Paris (a comedy) by John Gober, is running in the Baby Grand. Catch the 8pm show on either Friday or Saturday, or the matinee on Saturday at 2:30pm.
To kick off the Wolfe Island Music Festival aka WIMF 08, a "Townhall Hootenanny" tonight will feature the likes of: Luther Wright , Magic Jordan , The Abrams Brothers and many more. This party starts around 8:30pm and carries on into the evening at The General Wolfe Hotel, while the cost is a rock bottom $15.
Saturday, August 9th
Musical talents including Cadence Weapon , P.S. I Love You! , Wintersleep , Music Maul and many more take to the main stage at the Wolfe Island Music Festival at 1pm. For the low price of $30, it’s well worth it. Check out yesterday’s post for our previous coverage of this event. We’ll see you there!
In case you didn’t get your fill of music at WIMF 08, Aftershock is playing at the newly opened / Kingston’s only country music bar, the Wild Stallion . The newest addition to Kingston’s night life is located at 515 days Road.
Sunday, August 10th
Sunday is definitely reserved as a day of rest with all the activity this weekend. However if you must, we suggest the old faithful market behind City Hall for a relaxing time.
