All Quiet on the Weekend Front

You have to appreciate the difficulty we sometimes have in preparing the Friday edition of Kingstonist. We sincerely try to provide unique content day after day, rather than aggregate information from news papers and event calendars. To make this happen, we heavily rely on members of the community (that’s you) to send us interesting story ideas, and press releases for upcoming events. Although we are receiving a steady stream, for some reason this weekend seems to be a black hole of nothingness. That’s not to say the city is dead, but in comparison to events such as Buskers, the Poker Run or the Wolfe Island Music Festival, this weekend simply does not have a heavyweight to attract the masses.

Friday, August the 1st

The Merchant has been a bit different on Friday nights, but tonight we’re glad to announce that they’re welcoming Emily Fennell who’s fresh off a brief tour in Kamloops and Slocan Valley, BC, where she’s been playing with the likes of Sarah Harmer, Luther Wright and Carolyn Mark. The Merchant is always a blast, especially during patio season.

Have you ever thought you were a Playboy model, member of a boy band, or kung fu expert? Hypnotist Buzz Collins can make your dreams come true. Buzz is visiting a Time to Laugh Comedy Club for one night only, and take no responsibility for stomach pains or loss of bladder control as a cause of laughter. Doors open at 9pm.

Saturday, August the 2nd

In case you missed the opening reception last Thursday, The Artel is still showing their latest exhibit titled ‘Downtown: After then and Before Later.’ Artist Brent Pike-Nurse offers up a panoramic photographic exhibition that captures the changing face of Kingston’s downtown core as a living and breathing element. After checking out this exhibit myself, it is well worth your time. If you like The Artel, perhaps you’ll even consider living there as they are currently seeking two new tenants.

Although we missed out on the flashlight concert at the Modern Fuel Gallery last weekend, this weekend is also very busy for them. Infra-Ordinary presents the work of Christine D’Onofrio (Vancouver, BC), Toni Hafkenscheid (Toronto, ON), Dave Kemp (Toronto, ON) with Kevin Robbie (Kinston, ON), Preston Schiedel (Kingston, ON), and Collin Zipp (Winnipeg, MB). This exhibit centres around close examinations of the everyday to the extent that it is rendered unfamiliar. After a quick look at the various portfolios behind this show, it’s one that I will definitely be checking out this weekend.

Sunday, August the 3rd

Sunday’s are pretty lame. Still, we highly recommend taking in the Farmers and Antique Market behind City Hall.  From fresh produce to furniture, it’s a great reason to get outside and enjoy the downtown.

Blame the quietness on this “long weekend with no name”. Sunday Night kicks off NFL preseason, ya the football will suck but my team is the Redskins and they play the Colts on TSN.
