Now, Take Your Kingstonist With You!

Well - the announcement turned out to be the calendar, but we were hard at work on a mobile version, too! I’m excited to be announcing the test launch of Kingstonist To Go - the mobile Kingstonist. It’s ust a starting point for us - we want your feedback - but we felt that it would be better to have your help guiding the development of this project then to surprise you with it. So check out http://m.kingstonist.com from a mobile device and let us know what you think!

Limestone City Blues FestWell after a long weekend of the Blues, it sure is nice to see the sun is still shinning on us. The Limestone City Blues Festival went off without a hitch once again. The acts were all top notch and very entertaining. But there was one act that stood out from the crowd, and that was Jimmy Bowskill. This kid is only 17 years old and hails from Petebrough. He has the talent to become one of the greatest guitarists of our time. Pretty bold statment, but he backs it up for me with skill that equals those of the late, great Carlos Santana and Jeff Healy. He started playing at the age of 10, and by 13 he had mastered the 6 sting. If you had the chance to see him play Thursday night at Confederation Basin, you witnessed the top teir of the future Blues scene.

Check out lots more pictures at Z Photography. Enjoy!

Big Announcement

SecretKingstonist has a big, secret project that we are frantically putting the final touches on.  So, be sure to visit us tomorrow when we make the official announcement.  Whatever could it be?  Well, we didn’t get an arena, Market Square or Library named after us.  Nor did we stumble upon plans to build a second crossing, expand the size of the airport, or cancel Queen’s Homecoming.  Perhaps Rosen is resigning and Don Cherry is running for Mayor?  Stay tuned to find out!

Last Movie in the Square

First off, I want to apologize to those who visited on Friday and did not find the regular event-related post you have come to expect from the Kingstonist team. I take full responsibility if you did not make it out to the Limestone City Blues Fest , which by all accounts was a complete success (if you like the Blues). While attending a wedding this past weekend, it dawned on me that I have yet to take in a movie in the square. A few weeks ago I was out for my regular evening jog and came across the rows of people who were taking in a movie I could not identify. This is probably owing to my super sonic running speed. With the final Movie in the Square set to go down this coming Thursday, I am determined to make an appearance. However, seeing as I’ve never heard of "Splash ", the last movie selected for screening, I am not sure it will be overly great. The one liner for this Tom Hanks flick reads: "Two days ago, this girl showed up naked at the Statue of Liberty. For Alan Bauer, it was love at first sight. Now, everyone is chasing her… trying to prove she’s a mermaid. From the first laugh you’ll be hooked." Wish me luck, and with any luck, they will add another movie to the schedule as was the case last summer.

Bubbles in the Fountain

Springer Market Square FountainComing home from a grueling day of hard work and long hours, my boyfriend and I stumbled upon this crazy happening. Millions of bubbles came foaming out of the Market Square Fountain late on Wednesday night. The bubbles were so intense they were dripping over the sides. Read more

Iron Man

Modern and medieval ideas are applied in Jordi Bonet’s work, Iron Man, found on West Campus in front of the south entrance to Duncan McArthur Hall.

Born in Barcelona in 1932 and having moved to Quebec in 1954, Bonet is known for his large ceramic murals. More of his works such as the Our lady of the Sky Chapel, Ensemble of Nitches and Acte d’Amour can be found all over the world.

Commissioned on the completion of Duncan McArthur Hall by the Art Purchase Committee in 1972, Iron Man is an attempt to bring together twelfth-century Romanesque and twentieth-century Cubist aesthetics. Similar to Picasso, Bonet uses triangular patterns on the top of the work. On the rest of the work, he uses various other textures more reminiscent of the rustic feel of Romanesque sculpture. The large scale of the work is also a nod towards the Romanesque period.

Iron Man is an interesting, and I think, somewhat strange work. It is one of the few sculptures at Queen’s that is still located in the place for which it was designed. Go have a look!

The New Fare Box: Six Tips For Transit Riders

Kingston Transit Fare BoxIf you’re a Kingston Transit rider, you know that the summer months usually mean that the buses are less full and more on time thanks to a lack of students and good weather. While the lack of ridership is generally looked upon as a bad thing, Kingston Transit likes to use this slow period - particularly May and June - to introduce route, schedule and service changes. Although we did receive a handful of those earlier this summer, there’s a second change happening to our buses right now that has people talking. To get a closer look at the new fare boxes, I went for a few ride-alongs on our buses and had some good chats with a few drivers. Read more

Urban Outfitters For those of you who don’t know, Kingston’s mecca of cool is now open. In case you have no idea what I’m talking about, you can read about it here and here. Urban Outfitters are the new tenants in the old Royal Bank location on Princess, situated just up from Montreal. They have totally decked it out with the sort of lazy, “too hip to be cool” style that has made them successful in Toronto, Montreal and across North America. More pics of Kingston’s newest retail outlet can be found here . Go check it out, but remember that Minotaur sells some of the same knick knacks, and they are not owned by some faceless entity. So make sure you support the little guy first!
