It’s been a busy week for me, as I’ve said goodbye to the world of renting, and hello to a new house. I can’t seem to take three steps inside without tripping over an unpacked box, or project that needs my attention. I am very much looking forward to getting out and about this weekend to take a break from it all. Before I get started, I would like to take the time to bid farewell to our resident podcaster David Bailey, who has now moved abroad to take on a challenging new position in Kosovo. His contributions will be greatly missed. As well, I would also like to officially welcome Oceanaria, a very active/local blogger who will be providing her unique spin on our great city. In the wake of her Canada Day fireworks display, I can’t wait to see what she comes up with. Without further ado, here’s what’s happening around Kingston this weekend.
Friday, 4th of July
As a part of the Music in the Park series, Big Band Friday is taking place tonight at 7pm with a jazz-oriented show in the new courtyard at Market Square. Be sure to check out the new fountain behind City Hall while your there.
Manolo and Elario will tame the turn tables and spin crowd pleasing dance tracks until last call at Joy Supper Club, which is fast becoming Kingston’s most popular dance club. How far the place has come since the Cocamo days.
In case thumping bass isn’t your thing, Boru’s Harp will be playing celtic and fiddle songs across the street at the RCHA. Although the RCHA doesn’t have fog machines and disco balls, they do have the cheapest drinks in the city and the music is sure to get you dancing.
Saturday, 5th of July
The local chapter of the American Motors Owners Association is hosting an international Car Show and Convention at the Royal Military College, located just across the LaSalle Causeway. The antique car show will take place all day, although you’ve probably already seen the antique cars around the city.
Chicago blues legend Lil’ Ed and The Blues Imperials will take the stage at AJ’s Ale House. Doors open at 9pm and tickets can be purchased at the Ale House and the Brass Pub.
If you don’t want a case of the blues, check out The Ones playing at the Tir Na Nog.
Sunday, 6th of July
Take a stroll downtown and browse the Summer Sidewalk Sale, as merchants take to the streets offering tremendous savings not found at other times of the year. This is going on all weekend long, while Sunday is simply your last chance.
Last but not least is a recurring event that really needs no listing, but I am constantly reminded about. Whether you’ve been living in Kingston all your life, are a temporary resident or just passing through on vacation, the Sunday Market is by far one of the best things we have going.

Thanks for the welcome, I’m looking forward to contributing here, as you already know. :)
The “sidewalk sale” was a hilarious disappointment. I don’t even know why you guys posted it, or why the city even bothers to advertise it. There is nothing special about setting up a small table of discount junk in front of your store. Really no different than any other sunny day, where merchants clutter the sidewalk. Seriously though, close down Princess St and move the stores outside for a day. Then you can call it a sidewalk sale.
