Is Rosen a False Messiah?
If you transited the area between Princess Street and Queen’s University this weekend, you may have caught a brief glimpse of a set of posters featuring our sometimes loveable, though often despised, Mayor Harvey Rosen. According to reports, the posters featured the Mayor’s smiling mug with embellishments such as long hair, and a goatee, which gave him a Jesus-like appearance. His altered image was accompanied by the words “false messiah”, and in a few locations, disturbing anti-semitic language was also discovered. The posters were reported after a resident noticed them on mail boxes, telephone booths and bus stops in the Sydenham Ward. Kingston Police were called, and they quickly began removing them. Anyone know where we can get a copy? Read more
Weekend Roundup
Is it just me, or were we too busy to post our weekend must-do list last Friday? I really hope that didn’t leave you stranded indoors all weekend long, but rest assured, we’re working on a spiffy new calendar application that will keep up to date with all sorts of events happening in and around Kingston. In the meantime, here’s what’s going on in the Limestone City this weekend. Read more
Movies in the Square
A few weeks ago, I ventured out to Kingston Family Fun World and parked for a double feature at the Drive In. For the amazing price of $11, I got to see summer blockbusters, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, as well as Iron Man, all in the comfort of my four-door sedan. The amazing nostalgia of this experience made me yearn for more, which has already led to talks about going back to the Drive In to see the new Batman, and Hellboy 2 flicks later this summer. With my rejuvenated cinematic craving in mind, while reading over the list of events for First Capital Days, I stumbled across the first listing for “Movies in Market Square“, which is becoming our one and only annual outdoor summer film festival. Weekly Photo
Bigfoot came to town!! Yes thats right, we are talking about the legendary monster truck, not the Canadian folklore creature. Edge Motorsports, the same promoters that brought us the freestyle motocross FMX World Tour a couple months ago, brought us BigFoot and 5 others car destroyers! These monstrosities they call trucks are anything but normal trucks. Tires standing 6 feet tall, engines that can produce 1500 Hp, and an exhaust roar that puts even my motorbike’s exhaust note to shame. And believe me my bike is loud! Ear protection was a must at this show and so was being young at heart. This was a show for kids, gear heads and those who enjoy seeing things get crushed like a pancake.
On a side note, don’t let the empty seats around the floor make you think this was not a well attended show. These seats were left empty on purpose as a safety precaution just in case one of the trucks got a little to excited. Both shows Saturday night and Sunday afternoon were well received. There are lots more pictures in my new Monster Truck set.
A Minute of My Time
This is the first installment of what I hope to make a weekly series featuring outdoor art around Kingston. There is so much of it, some of which we walk by everyday without taking the time to really look and ponder why it is there. I’d like to begin on Queen’s campus with the Agnes Etherington Art Centre. Morrison’s Restaurant
If ever there was a Kingston institution, it would have to be the greasy spoon known far and wide as Morrison’s Restaurant. Located on King Street, Morrison’s enjoys prime real estate that looks out onto Springer Market Square behind City Hall. The street-side marquee is an awesome throwback to yesterday, while the retro interior is similarly aged to perfection. A classic, casual diner, Morrison’s is always buzzing with activity, and the constant clatter of dishes and cutlery in one of the cities most active kitchens. It’s as well known as many of the historic landmarks in the area, and you either love it or hate it. As shocking as it may seem, I was surprised to find out that there are people in Kingston who don’t like Morrison’s! Read more
Meet Johnny San
Recently our resident podcaster, David Bailey, got a chance to sit down with local singer and songwriter Johnny Sanfilippo, aka Johnny San.
Johnny has been writing and producing his own music which he has played solo at local bars. He is now working with a new band and hoping to start performing live again soon.
Have listen to the podcast and find out more about Johnny at his MySpace.
The DTZ Takeover
A noticeable amount of DTZ Barnicke signs have been spreading like an uncontrollable disease throughout Kingston in the past few months. These big, bright red billboards are being plastered on building facades, parking lots, and open fields, to peddle both land and office space that’s either for lease or sale. Although for lease signage is not a new element of the urban landscape, the steady influx of big red has somewhat changed my perception of our fair city. In the past, I always considered JJ Barnicke to be a small player in comparison to the infamous Springer clan, but it seems as though there’s been a shift in real estate powerhouses. Read more
June Comment Contest
This month we thought we’d offer something a little different. You know that big, red trolley that you see all around town all summer long? How many of you have ever thought to take a ride? Me neither. I’d love to though. There are tons of sites in Kingston that I know nothing about and I think a trolley ride might be just the thing to expand our knowledge of this great city. This month’s prize for the Kingstonist comment contest is two fee tickets on The Confederation Tour Trolley.
The 50-minute tour includes the Royal Military College, Fort Henry, Fort Frontenac, Kingston’s penitentiaries, Olympic Harbour (site of the 1976 Olympic Sailing events), Bellevue House (residence of Sir John A. Macdonald) and Queen’s University. Even if you’ve been before, the tour has been updated this year so you’re bound to learn something new. Or you can re-gift your tickets to friends or family who are planning a visit this summer. Convenience is key, so you’ll be glad to know that the trolley leaves City Hall every hour, on the hour, 7 days a week, rain or shine. Keep the comments coming and it could be you on the next tour!
Take the “Free Ride” Challenge
To celebrate Clean Air Day, and promote public transportation, the City of Kingston is offering free bus rides all day long on June the 4th. With the price of regular and diesel fuel skyrocketing throughout Canada, the convenience of owning a personal motor vehicle is becoming a severe financial burden for some. This has resulted in more and more people relying on public transportation, while others choose to take the bus for equally important environmental reasons. Whether your reasons are green, or to save your green, you can participate in Clean Air Day just by riding the bus tomorrow. Read more
