Did someone mention that Kingstonist is working on an event calendar? Finding and feeding information into this application is something we do not want to tackle alone, so if you want to help us consolidate all the fun and exciting events going on in and around Kingston, please drop us a line. Speaking of excitement, this weekend is jam packed with way too much! I dare you to try and do everything we’ve got listed here.
Friday, 20th of June
Podcasters Across Boarders (PAB) is an annual, weekend-long event that brings together new media guru’s from all over the world to a convention that’s hosted in the heart of the city. Topics of discussion range from social media science to what public broadcasters can learn from podcasters (and vice versa). Kingstonist members will be in attendance, acting like sponges to absorb all the juicy talent of fellow PABer’s. Registration is now closed.
I don’t frequently listen to top 40 radio so I might be out of the loop on this one, but does anyone know who these guys are? A band named State of Shock is headlining at Aj’s Ale House tonight, with special guest; a name we do recognize, Econoline Crush. Tickets are a steal of a deal at $15 per person.
As always, Emily Fennell will be rocking out for the crowd at The Merchant, which is the unofficial home for all the PAB folks. Emily always puts on a great show, and the Merch has a ridiculous number of drafts on tap. Really great vibe.
Saturday, 21st of June
The 16th Annual Teddy Bear Picnic kicks off at 9:30 at Lake Ontario Park. An event that’s truly for the young at heart, highlights include a Pancake Breakfast, various children’s entertainers, rides aboard a miniature train, t-shirt painting and face decorating. Admission is $3 per child, while parents and bears get in free.
The Skeleton Park Music Festival goes down on Saturday, with an outdoor music festival that lasts from 10am until dusk. Although this event started on Thursday with mini-shows here and there, this is the big one. Performance by the likes of Ms. Fennell, Ianspotting, Sheesham and Lotus and many more! Admission is free, and you are encouraged to bring your own dishes.
Bring the evening to a close with a Haunted Walk of Kingston. Attendees can choose between the Original Haunted Walk of Kingston, which snakes throughout the downtown, or Ghosts of the Fort, which explores the haunting history of Old Fort Henry. Tours are offered by lantern-light, and you’re encouraged to make a reservation or check their schedule.
Sunday, 22nd of June
Back to Lake Ontario Park yet again, for another First Capital Day-related event. Global Fusion Multicultural Showcase takes place from 10am to 5pm, while activities include musical entertainment, ethnic dance, Fort Henry Muster, cultural displays, crafts and much, much more. Admission is free, and this event will happen rain or shine.
The Sandra Whitton Gallery will be open from 2 to 4 pm, exhibiting the diversity of emotional expression with painter, J.T. Winik. “The expressions of the people Winik’s depicted on canvass aren’t clear as they force the audience to interact and interpret the meaning behind the subject’s expression”.
As always, the old faithful Antique and Farmer’s Market will be buzzing with activity behind City Hall. If you missed out last weekend, be sure to swing by to check out the brand new water fountain on the south-west side of the Springer Market Square.
