Is it just me, or were we too busy to post our weekend must-do list last Friday? I really hope that didn’t leave you stranded indoors all weekend long, but rest assured, we’re working on a spiffy new calendar application that will keep up to date with all sorts of events happening in and around Kingston. In the meantime, here’s what’s going on in the Limestone City this weekend.

Tommfest is a three day festival of the best blue grass, country, folk, and gospel music, which takes place at Lake Ontario Park. Hosted by the local Abrams Brothers, and featuring the Northern Sons, Biscuit Burners, and our personal favorites, Sheesham & Lotus. Tickets are $65 for a weekend pass, which includes camping, while children under 16 are free. All proceeds will be donated to the Tristan Osbourne Memorial Fund, and the Learning Disabilities Association of Kingston.
The Kingston Photographic Club started their annual juried exhibition and sale earlier this month, and we’ve been hearing lot’s of great feedback. Entries are on display in the Wilson Room at the Kingston Frontenac Public Library located at 130 Johnson Street.
St. George’s music director Edward Norman will direct his second annual choral concert at St. George’s Cathedral tonight at 8pm. Repertoire includes the Kingston premiere of Benjamin Britten’s cantata The Company of Heaven and Purcell’s verse-anthem O Sing Unto the Lord, sung by the Cathedral Singers with soloists and a small ensemble from the Kingston Symphony. General admission is $20, Seniors $18 and Students $13.

Pride Week finishes up in Kingston with an “out on the water” Dragon Boat Race, which runs from 9am until 3pm near the Wellington Street Dry Dock. Later on in the evening, DJ Haircut will scratching the vinyl at the Grad Club, with special guest appearances from Kelly Dear and Miss Tyffanie. Cover ranges from $6 to $10.
Evelyn Perry invites you to join her at Ben’s Pub for a Girl’s Night Out. The songwriter, poet, ironic social commentator, and outspoken dame aims to make you laugh, cry, sing and everything in between. Cover is $5 at the door.
Sunday, 15 June ’08
First Capital Days kick off in Market Square behind City Hall with a special brunch (reservations required) and ale tapping at the Kingston Brew Pub. This is followed by walking tours, a concert, and official ceremony to re-name the Square as Springer Market Square. If you can’t make it down on Sunday, there’s lot’s of other events going on the entire week.
What would Sunday be without a relaxing trip to the Market? Be a part of history, and visit the newly (re)named Springer Market Square to browse the various offerings from farmers, antique hunters, and local artisans.
Help us expand this weekly column by sending us your events! Your event isn’t on the weekend? That’s ok, we can find a place for it!
