City Landmarks Vol II

If you ask someone where the old brewery’s are in Kingston, chances are they’d point you towards the Kingston Brewing Company. Touché, but did you know that well over a century ago, Kingston was home to many well renowned brew masters. The Bajus Brewery was established in the 1820’s by a father and his two sons who emigrated to the Limestone City from Germany. This building is now part of the Bajus condominium development on Wellington Street, and unfortunately it no longer produces fine ales. Later on, James Morton founded Morton’s Distillery, which operated until the early 1900’s. However it only exists in the history books nowadays.
Although both Morton and the Bajus deserve recognition as pioneers of the pint, they weren’t the most famous distillers to have lived in the city. Read more
Parkway Trail

The City of Kingston is looking for your opinion on the newly proposed Parkway Trail which will connect the Bath Road end of Queen Mary Road to the south end of Parkway. The trail, totaling 857 metres in length and two metres wide, will be paved with asphalt, allowing easy use for cyclists, inline skaters and patients of Extendicare , which sits on the corner at one end of the path.
The proposed plans for the trail are available for comment online at Parkway Trail. A public open house, including a short presentation, will take place on Wednesday, May 21 at 7pm at Extendicare, 309 Queen Mary Road. Any comments on the new plan will be accepted until June 4 2008.
Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em

I was brought up to give it my all, and never quit anything I’d started. Even so, I don’t think that my parents would be disappointed to learn that I am a quitter, and I’m damn proud of it. You see, for years I considered myself a casual or social smoker, although I soon found myself smoking outside of social situations, and so regularly it was anything but casual. In fact, I was a professional closet-smoker, but I decided to break the habit and have been smoke free for nearly a year. Now I can run around without being winded, take pleasure in not smelling like an ashtray, and also enjoy the financial and longterm health benefits of fellow non-smokers. This was entirely my choice, and that’s where we enter into the argument concerning involuntary cessation of smoking in local prison facilities. Read more
Opening Soon

Walking around downtown, and driving throughout the township this weekend really opened my eyes up to all the new development that’s been going on throughout Kingston. Everywhere you turn there’s a new building being constructed, or leased sign posted in a future storefront. Then there’s the sprawling construction site bordering Division and the 401, which developers hope will become a shopping mecca for passersby who will no longer be able to resist the urge to stop in Kingston. Although it’s positive to see such growth around the city, I’m weary that it might be too much all at once. Read more

City Landmarks Vol I

Over the last few months, Kingstonist.com has focused on current issues and events in and around the city. During that time a sizable number of visitors from outside of Kingston have written in to express how much they love the growing collection of images on our Flickr page. In order to showcase a bit more of what Kingston has to offer to these potential visitors, and provide long time residents with a slight refresher, I’ve been asked to write about various historical sites around “the stone”. $32 Water Barrel Sale

As a recent and first time home owner, I was amazed by the list of items picked up during the initial home inspection. Given that our 100-year old home has an unfinished limestone basement, we were advised that it may never be dry, regardless of any improvements to the foundation, and adjacent drainage system. That being said, our home inspector highly recommended that we re-grade the lawn around our humble abode so that the slope would carry water away from the foundation. He also mentioned something that I had previously considered purchasing for environmental reasons, which was to collect rain water coming from downspouts with barrels. Read more
Serves You Right

There have been countless times where I’ve walked past an enticing restaurant, but have yet to build up the nerve to go inside. My general reluctance is due to the fact that I want to ensure that I make the most of my culinary experiences, in which case I more often than not opt for a tried, tested and true dining establishment. Thankfully, Kingstonist has forced me to broaden my gastronomical horizons, and embrace new taste sensations in locations that I’ve overlooked in the past. This past Saturday, I set out downtown to break the Megalo’s brunch routine and try something different. Read more
