As Monday is Victoria Day, don’t be surprised if our volunteer staff is otherwise disposed with their long weekend plans. In fact, what are you doing reading this on (insert day here)? Shouldn’t you be out enjoying all that Kingston has to offer? In case you don’t know what’s going on this weekend, we would like to offer the following suggestions.
Friday, May 16th
Modern Fuel presents One Dimensional Space featuring four artists, Melanie MacDonald (St. Catharines, ON), Leigh Mayoh (Ymir, BC), June Pak (Toronto, ON), and Kathleen Ritter and James B. Maxwell (Vancouver, BC). This exhibit, which runs all month long, “tests the thesis that the total administration of the life-world in capitalist society leads to the complacent consumption of a homogeneous culture.”
Union Gallery at Queen’s University is showing Post Monitor all month long, save for Victoria Day. The exhibit features 4th year Fine Arts students Jacqueline Collomb, Lisa Figge and Klaudio Shita, whose projects deal with the complex and often controversial concept of surveillance from diverse perspectives. If you recall, we recently featured one of their installations late last month.
A benefit concert for the Joe Chithalen Memorial Musical Instrument Lending Library (MILL) is taking place at A Time to Laugh Comedy Club on May 16th, featuring Revmatic, Ruling Christopher, Societys Sorrow, and Mellonhead. Doors open at 8pm, and the cover charge is $8 or donation of a musical instrument that is worth at least $8.
Saturday, May 17th
The Garden Bros. Circus are “taking it to the extreme” at the K-Rock Centre on May 17th and 18th. Tickets are $25 for adults, and $10 for children and seniors. Don’t forget about the crippling surcharge and other awesome fees when you’re ordering online.
Studio22 Open Gallery is showing 2 Aristografia, which features the beautifully crafted images of Ruth Dukas and Jeremy Ennis. According to the description of the exhibit, aristografia refers to a Russian Constructivist term meaning the creation of the beautiful Graphic Image. This show is on Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5pm.
Mojo Shooter will be rocking at the RCHA Club with their extra guest Spencer Evans. Although there is no admission clearly identified for this show, you can expect to pay $5 to $10 at the door.
Sunday, May 18th
Kingston Family Fun World is open all weekend long, with the drive-in featuring an all-nighter on all 3 screens on May 18th, featuring many new releases including: Iron Man, Speed Racer, The Chroniciles of Narnia: Prince of Caspian, and many more.
Music Maul and Blue Lake Stars are playing at The Toucan on the 18th. Not sure about admission, but typically you can get in without paying a cover.
One would also assume that there are fireworks planned for Monday, but I have yet to come across any such information on the city’s website.
