TGI Weekend
It’s that glorious time of the week, where we can kick back and relax, stay out later, and sleep in longer. Not only is it the weekend, but it’s the last weekend in May, and therefore the last chance to drop us a comment. Remember, comments automatically enter you into our super special contest to win a gift certificate for one of Kingston’s finest downtown restaurants. And without further adieu, here’s some of the highlights from this weekend’s event calendar. Read more
What to do with your E-Waste?
I recently embarked on a massive Spring cleaning session at home and at the office, and I accumulated a large pile of stuff I no longer had use for. Being a big proponent of recycling, I ensured that all my scraps of paper made it into the grey box, while old clothing and useful household items were donated to the Good Will. After the dust bunnies settled, I was left with numerous boxes of old CDs, obsolete floppy disks and various electronic gadgets that were of use to no one. This type of material is commonly referred to as e-waste, and surprisingly, Kingston does not yet have a formal program to divert these toxic items from our landfill facilities. Read more

OK so this photo is not really an artistic photo, but it does show what was probably the biggest event to happen this past weekend. This is the parade of Leather and Chrome that took place Sunday morning as part of the Ride for Dad in support of Prostate Cancer research. The one day event rasied $66,000.00 that stays locally for reasearch, and there was 491 motorcycles officially register but we know the number participating was even higher. After the parade the bike took part in a poker run that wound it’s way through Kingston West, Odessa, Nappanee, Bellville, Picton and back to Kingston for a total of 188Kms. He moves pretty fast for a dead guy
The Beat Beethoven Run has been an exciting event for the Kingston community for the past fourteen years. Every year, community members participate in an 8km run or 4km walk from City Hall with the goal of returning before The Kingston Symphony has completed Beethoven’s 50-minute 3rd Symphony. The event is a fundraiser for our town’s wonderful symphony orchestra and has been a hit with the community.
It all began in the spring of 1993 when two runners, Dan Gaynor and Todd Pearson were running and had a discussion about the troubling financial issues the local symphony orchestra was facing. Read more
Spaghetti Is Ready
The seasonal student population of Queen’s, St. Lawrence and RMC has been departing over the past few weeks, and the impact has been noticeable in the area between the institutions, specifically the downtown strip. We’ve noticed signs in various storefronts announcing reduced hours until the tourist traffic picks up, while other ghetto-centric eateries have closed up shop entirely until the return of our young scholars in September. This trend was noted on my recent culinary adventure to Spaghetti is Ready, a relatively new Italian resto on the corner of Division and Queen. Read more
Weekend Update
Who doesn’t love a four-day work week? After a chilly long weekend, Ron Burgundy and the gang down at Channel 4 are predicting sunny skies along with what we consider seasonally normal temperatures. The Invista-Ambassador-Rona-Swish- Whig-Standard Arena
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Kingston has more hockey arenas per capita than any other city in the world, and therefore by default we should be front runners to succeed Detroit and assume their coveted title of “Hockey Town”. With the recent allegations regarding the Mayor’s conflict of interest in naming the LVEC K-Rock Centre, many Kingstonians have been waiting on the edge of their seats to see what the new multi-million dollar, multi-rink facility on the west end would be named. On the 21st day of the 5th month in the year 2008, the City of Kingston proudly presents The Invista- Ambassador-Rona-Swish-Whig-Standard Arena. Read more
